The Dial-up Wire Modems
Dial-up wire modems function like telephones. Two modems make a temporary, or “switched,” connection, and data transfers. Since Dial-up modems use ordinary telephone lines, dial-up modem lines are widely available. However, line quality can vary greatly. It is best to use dial-up type modems for occasional data transfer (like programming and diagnostics), not for continuous PLC communications. Dial-up line costs include an initial installation fee, a fixed monthly charge and potential per-minute charges based upon telephone company rates.
