A Quick Look at the MDL500 Monitoring Data Linc Modem

The MDL500 is a 2 wire private lines modem which allows RS-232 communication at rates up to 9600 baud in both half and full duplex. It uses FSK at high frequencies that provide for high immunity to crosstalk and outside noise interference. It can transmit data for a distance of up to 4 miles over 22 gauge 2 wire, or 7.5 miles on 4 wires. The MDL500 comes configured either as a Master or as a Remote according to system needs. Settings for half duplex or full duplex are made by the use of jumpers on the modem board (see “Jumper Settings”). The MDL500 is encased in a rugged steel enclosure with large mounting flanges at the front and rear for ease of installation.

The MDL500 connects to any PC or PLC through the DB-25 female connector located on the rear of the modem. The communication line also connects to the rear in the 2 position pluggable terminal block, 2 terminal blocks exist on 4 wire modem. A terminal for the wire is supplied with each modem.
