Frequently Asked Questions
Our radios are transparent to both Ethernet and serial traffic and support a wide range of industrial communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, and DF1 (Allen-Bradley). Most models in our SRM and CIX product families include RS-232 and RS-485 serial ports alongside standard 10/100 Ethernet connectivity.
For serial connections, your equipment needs matching DTE/DCE configuration and serial parameters — baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits. For Ethernet connections, it just needs compatible network settings, such as IP addressing and subnet configuration.
Data-Linc has also been a Rockwell Automation Technology Partner for more than 30 years, so integration with Allen-Bradley PLCs is a proven path, not just a checkbox protocol.
Range depends on the model and the band: our 900MHz SRM8200 reaches up to 40 miles line-of-sight, the SRM6030/6230 family reaches 35+ miles, and our 2.4GHz HSM240E-SD typically covers 9–10 miles. Real-world range depends on terrain, obstructions, and antenna selection — our free Wireless Network Design Tool (WiDe) and free RF-path study service can help you model your specific site before you buy.
No — within a single network, radios need to be the same model to communicate with each other. An SRM8200 only talks to other SRM8200 units, an HSM500 only to other HSM500 units, and so on.
That said, different radio models or frequency bands can operate in the same physical area without interfering with each other — a 900MHz network and a 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz network can run side by side, since the bands don't overlap. They just won't exchange data directly with one another.
Some models offer backward or forward compatibility under specific configurations. For custom setups or compatibility questions, contact Data-Linc Technical Support.
Yes. Our radio modems are designed to integrate with a wide range of existing SCADA and PLC systems. For Ethernet applications, compatible models transparently bridge Ethernet traffic across the wireless link, allowing industrial Ethernet protocols — including DNP3 over IP — to pass between connected devices.
For serial applications, RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces support integration with legacy equipment using protocols such as Modbus RTU, DNP3, and Allen-Bradley DF1.
Compatibility depends on the specific radio model, PLC interface, and protocol being used. For legacy or custom systems, please contact Data-Linc Technical Support to confirm compatibility.
Our SRM and CIX radios incorporate multiple technologies to maintain reliable communications in challenging RF environments. Depending on the model, these include Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), Forward Error Correction (FEC), Listen-Before-Talk (LBT), IP filtering, configurable channel/frequency settings, and other interference-mitigation features. Together, these capabilities help minimize the effects of competing RF traffic, industrial noise, and other sources of interference while maintaining reliable data communications.
Most of our wireless modems are FCC (USA) and IC (Canada) certified. The 2.4GHz modems also have CE (Europe). Certification details vary by product, so check the datasheet for the specific model you're using to confirm what applies.
Yes, on request, we can pre-configure your radios at the factory with your network IP addressing, radio addressing, and channel/frequency settings before they ship, so the units link up and pass data as soon as they're powered on in the field — no laptop or serial console session required on-site. Just note the request on your purchase order and our team will configure and test the units to your specifications before they go out.
The radios themselves are low-maintenance — rated for -40°F to 167°F operation, so they handle extreme heat and cold without issue, and they mount directly to a DIN rail for a rugged, vibration-resistant install. There's no scheduled maintenance for the electronics themselves.
That said, since the link depends on line of sight, changes in the physical environment — growing trees and vegetation, new buildings or structures — can affect signal strength over time. We recommend periodically checking antennas, cables, and signal levels, especially if you notice a change in network performance.
Yes. We offer a free Preliminary Virtual RF Site Survey for straightforward networks — typically two to five sites. You can fill in the RF-Path Study form here. For larger networks or a more detailed report, contact our engineering team, and we'll scope what's needed for your project. There may be a fee involved based on the scope of the project.
Both. Data-Linc products are available through our network of distributors, system integrators, and resellers worldwide, and also directly from Data-Linc. You can request a quote on our site or contact us to be connected with the best option for your region and order size.
The minimum order is one modem. There is a 10% Process and Handling Fee for single modem orders.
Yes — contact our Engineering Team to learn more about our demo program. We require a purchase order with a $0 value for a 30-day trial period. You're responsible for shipping the units both to and from your location during the trial. All demo units are brand new, and if you decide to keep them, we'll send an invoice at the price agreed upon. In case the modems are being returned, to avoid additional charges, ensure that the modems are returned in like-new condition in their original packaging. Demo units are subject to availability.
Our products include a one-year warranty from the date of purchase.
To request service, contact our engineering team by phone: +1 (425) 882-2206 or email our support desk — describe what you're observing, and we'll provide a service form along with an RMA number. Units shipped back without an RMA number, or without proper documentation and packaging, may be delayed in processing.
Repair costs depend on what our technicians find during testing; you'll receive a quote before any repair work begins, if there is going to be a charge.
Our tech services team responds to all messages and emails within two business days, and offers project assistance, RF-path studies, and our free WiDe network design tool to help you plan and troubleshoot deployments. Call +1 (425) 882-2206 and ask for tech support, or reach out to our engineering support email.
